Called to Care

Would you like to make a college student's day? We need more volunteers to donate food items, school supplies or other goodies for our care packages. We have 14 students and need more help. We do this so they know that they are being remembered by their church family. We have found that we have not only touched the lives of our students but their roommates and friends. God's word can spread in many ways. If you would like to help, please call either Paul at the church office or Barb Steele at 288-5871. Thanks for helping.

Jesus, during his life, ministered to the sick and lonely. The diaconate of Bar Harbor Congregational Church, United Church of Christ is called to assist the pastor in caring for the sick, the sorrowing, the indifferent, and the stranger. The purpose of the care-giving ministry, Called to Care, is to train lay people of the church to intentionally reach out to meet the needs of the members and friends of this congregation.

The earliest stories of the Christian tradition reveal the central role of love within the Christian community of faith. The Book of Acts is filled with accounts of ways the early Christians cared for one another and the wider community. In fact, Jesus believed that love was actually a distinguishing mark of Christian discipleship. It could be said that the story of the Christian faith is a story of love: the love of God for humanity and humanity's response to God's love.

The Goals of the Called to Care Lay Ministry:

Seek to live out with renewed faithfulness Jesus command to love one another.

Strengthen our church as a community that cares, called by a God who cares.

By enhancing the skills for and ministries of care-giving by lay persons through training and organization.
